Statement from Franchise Over Lucas Dr. Whataburger:

“Food safety is Whataburger’s top priority and we take all situations like this seriously. We are looking into this situation and would like to speak with the customers to make sure we resolve this the right way.”

Mike Shockley, District Manager for Burgers of Beaumont

Earlier Story:

A man was a released from a hospital Monday after he says x-rays confirmed he was injured by pieces of wood embedded in a sausage biscuit.

The man says he choked, coughed up blood and later found small fragments of wood inside the sausage patty.

Lewis Martin and his wife say Monday morning they stopped at the Whataburger on Lucas to grab a quick bite to eat, but say their fast food breakfast turned into a long day.

Martin, his wife, son and several friends were eating sausage biscuits this morning when he says he began choking.

His wife says the food was lodged in his throat. She tried to get the food out, and in the process, watched him turn purple.

Martin's wife says she hit him in the back and the food popped out. He says he spit up blood and that's when they went to the hospital.

On the drive to Christus Saint Elizabeth, his wife began pulling apart the meat patty and says she found 6 pieces of wood inside.

Martin was admitted to the emergency room and had x-rays taken.

He and his wife say it was a scary situation. What lasted only a short time, seemed like an eternity.

"Being stuck on the floor and fearing for my life .. To coming .. Hoping it would release itself enough where get out of my throat where I can breathe again," says Lewis Martin.

"I'm very lucky it didn't hurt my husband like that. Because I don't know what I would've done if I had lost my husband," says April Martin.

The Martins say they want the company to pay for the medical expenses.

A manager at the Whataburger on Lucas did not want to comment when we called earlier today.
